Tour Gourmet Peru (1) 9 days

Day 1: Arrival to Lima

You will be picked up at Jorge Chávez airport in Lima. Welcome to Peru! We will head to your hotel to check in and rest. Depending on the arrival time we will make a short tour of modern Lima, visiting Parque Kennedy in Miraflores, the ‘Calle de las Pizzas’ and other popular spots. We will sample a delicious pisco sour cocktail at the Rustic restaurant on the Costa Verde.

Day 2: Lima - City Tour

Today we get to know the city, but first Gourmet Tour Peru will present you with a t-shirt and an apron with typical Peruvian designs – this will help you get into the spirit of the culinary activities we will undertake during our tour. We head to a juice stall in the Surquillo market, where we will sample some of the great diversity of Peruvian fruits from the coast, sierra and jungle regions, such as mangos, pacay, granadillas and cherimoya. Inn the vegetable section we will see products including chilies, Porcon mushrooms, and many varieties of native potatoes. In the seafood section, we learn the difference between shrimps and prawns and see varieties of fish, shellfish and octopus.

From here we take a tour through colonial and modern Lima: we will visit the main plaza, the government palace, the town hall, the cathedral the catacombs under the church of San Francisco and colonial mansions. We’ll also visit the ‘home of Peruvian gastronomy’ where we absorb 500 years of culinary fusion. We take a stroll and have lunch in Chinatown, and then head to a bookshop where there are books on Peru’s history and cuisine. In the evening we head to the seaside in Barranco to visit the Bridge of Sighs and sample tapas and delicious anticuchos. Then it’s back to the hotel to take a rest.

Meals included: Breakfast.
Optional: Gourmet dinner in the famous restaurant Huaca Pucllana, with an impressive view on the Huaca Pre-Inca.

Day 3: Tour Lima – Paracas: Adventure along the Pacific.

Early in the morning we head along the Panamerican highway to the Bay of Paracas. On the way to Pisco we’ll have the opportunity to buy fruit and drinks. Day 4: Paracas – Nazca - Cuzco: Water, earth and air

After breakfast we take a boat to visit the Ballestas Islands. The trip takes us around the Bay of Paracas and the port of San Martin. On the slopes of an enormous sand dune we see the giant drawing of mysterious “candle holder”. We also see sea lions and a multitude of sea birds in their natural habitat, whose idiosyncratic rock formations create one of the most attractive landscapes of the Peruvian coast. Lunch in a typical Peruvian restaurant. At midday we continue our journey towards Nazca, making a stop to visit a vineyard and the oasis of Huacachina. In the afternoon we take a flight over the impressive and mysterious Nazca lines. Later we continue on towards Cusco in night bus.

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5: City Tour Cuzco: Treasures of the Incan capital

Arrival and breakfast in Cusco. You will have the morning at your free disposal. In the afternoon, we will participate a guided city tour visiting the main plaza, the cathedral and Koricancha, a former military and religious centre of the Incan empire that is dedicated to the sun god. Outside the city, we will examine Tambomachay (Inca baths), Puca Pucara (a military control centre), the Kenko amphitheatre (prove of the mystic character of the time) and the fortress Sacsayhuaman, that is located on a hill of Cusco. It's famous for its stones that form the external walls and were curved with an enourmous amount of precision. A couple of them are higher than 9 metres and weigh more than 350 tons. Afterwards we will return to our hotel.

Meals included: Breakfast
Optional: Dinner in the restaurant Cicciolina, the best restaurant of the city.

Day 6: Tour Cuzco - Ollantaytambo – Sacred Valley – Aguas Calientes.

The day begins with an excursion to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, where you will have the chance to see the typical Incan terraces and villages, such as Pisac with its colourful Indian market, Calca, Yucay and Urubamba. After lunch we will explore Ollantaytambo, an extensive complex that was used as an administration, agricultural and religious centre in the Inca era. Here you can see large rock walls, temples and palace. From Ollantaytambo we take a train to Aguas Calientes where we spend the night.

Meals included: Breakfast.

Day 7: Aguas Calientes - Wonder of the world “Machu Picchu” - Cuzco

From Aguas Calientes we will climb up to the "lost Inca city" and one of the new seven wonders of the world in a 25 minutes zig zag course. In the next 3 hours, we will learn more about the ruins. Our guide explains to us, what an incredible amount of technology was required and how precise the builders must have treated the massive stone to let this complex emerge. The laid out water-spending canals indicate that the Incas had a profound knowledge of hydraulic processes. The stairs that were curved into the stones and the Intihuatana (or the "highest point of the sun"), that was used as a solar calendar und affected the seeding and harvesting, are forms of expression of the fundamental knowledge and the technological progress of the empire. All those constructions along with the temple of the sun, the "Tumba Real", the priest's house, the Inca baths and the "Templo de las tres Ventanas" allow us to plunge back into the past. With the help of our guide we can admire these impressive constructions. In the afternoon we will head back to Cusco.

Meals included: Breakfast.

Day 8: Cusco: Free day + cooking class

Today is a free day to relax, shop, and enjoy the beautiful Imperial City of Cusco. Places of cultural interest to visit include the house of Inca Garcilaso de la Vega (one of the first Incan chroniclers), the church of San Blas and the surrounding barrio, known for its artists and craftsmen. Today we also will have our cooking class. You can choose from the most famous Peruvian meals.
